Disney's Typhoon Lagoon drops you into a tropical paradise that supposedly got hit by a massive storm, leaving behind one of the most immersive water parks you'll ever visit. The centerpiece is a massive lagoon with some of the best artificial waves I've experienced - they're big enough to bodysurf but gentle enough for kids to enjoy. The whole place feels like a shipwrecked island, complete with a shrimp boat perched on top of Mount Mayday that spouts water every few minutes.
The theming here puts most other water parks to shame. You've got multiple body slides and raft rides that wind through caves and waterfalls, plus Crush 'n' Gusher, which is basically a water coaster that uses jets to push your raft uphill. The snorkeling lagoon Shark Reef lets you swim with actual tropical fish and harmless sharks, which is pretty incredible for a water park.
Families with younger kids will love Ketchakiddee Creek, a massive play area with smaller slides and interactive features. The lazy river here, Castaway Creek, actually goes through caves and under waterfalls - it's not just a boring circle like at most parks. Disney's attention to detail shows everywhere, from the tropical landscaping to the backstory woven throughout the park.
Get there at rope drop because it fills up fast, especially during summer and holidays. The food is typical Disney theme park fare, so it's decent but expensive. Rent a premium cabana if your budget allows - the shade and dedicated service make a huge difference on busy days.
This park works best for families with kids of all ages since there are thrills for teens but plenty for little ones too. Just remember this is Disney, so expect crowds and premium pricing, but also expect an experience that's more polished than your typical water park.
